SPORTSMANSHIP

Playfit is a social comp built on good people looking after each other. Here’s what a good sport looks like at Playfit — and what we ask everyone to avoid.

✔ A GOOD SPORT IS…

A good sport shows respect to their fellow teammates, as well as their opponents. They play for the love of the game and not the scoreboard.

RESPECTFUL

Shares the ball around and gets everyone on the team involved. Always finds the open player with the best shot opportunity, regardless of their ability. Always supportive of teammates whether they make a good play or a mistake.

A TEAM PLAYER

Acknowledges when a foul has been made that would impact the game. Respects foul calls and hands the ball over to the other team when a foul is called. Takes their turn to sub off each half so that everyone gets equal court time.

A FAIR PLAYER

Always calls their own fouls that impact plays. If there is too much accidental contact, takes responsibility by apologising and ensuring the other player is ok. Helps other players up.

SOMEONE WHO TAKES RESPONSIBILITY

Always encourages teammates and acknowledges when someone does something well. Even if it's an opponent, a good sport will appreciate and celebrate good play on both ends of the court.

SOMEONE WHO ENCOURAGES OTHERS

If a player cannot make a game, they give the club as much notice as possible.

A GOOD COMMUNICATOR

Knows how to defend fairly without fouling, or putting themselves or others at risk of injury. Always leaves space to avoid unnecessary contact. Vocally helps out teammates on defence. Doesn't aggressively defend beginner players — gives them more space to build confidence and have fun.

A GOOD DEFENDER

Forgives themselves and teammates for missing shots or throwing a bad pass. A positive influence on court who always does their best to keep the mood on court fun and friendly.

SOMEONE WITH A GOOD ATTITUDE

✖ A BAD SPORT IS…

Being rude to other players or staff on or off court. Foul language of any kind on or off court. Continuing to play and/or shoot the ball after a foul call or injury. Taking Playfit games too seriously.

DISRESPECTFUL

Doesn’t move the ball well, shoots early in a possession without getting teammates involved. Takes poor shots (heavily defended, falling away, off-balance) when a teammate is open for a better opportunity.

A BALL HOG

Argues foul calls on the court and holds up the game. Aggressively throws the ball down or at the other team when a foul is called. Refuses to take their turn to sub off each half.

ARGUMENTATIVE

Initiates unnecessary and/or excessive contact with other players. Plays on when it is not appropriate (player injured, opposition tying shoelace, etc.). Fails to ask if a player is ok after contact, and fails to offer help to a player who is injured or has fallen.

IRRESPONSIBLE

Fails to acknowledge good work by teammates, and reprimands someone when they make a mistake. Puts down other players who they don't feel are up to their own standard.

DISCOURAGES OTHERS

Makes a habit of cancelling on the day of their game, giving very little notice to the club, or simply doesn't show up with no explanation.

A POOR COMMUNICATOR

Deliberately fouls to stop an opponent from scoring, recklessly chases loose balls, doesn't provide enough space to ensure safety. Initiates dangerous contact while opponents are moving at speed or in the air. Plays aggressive defence against beginner players — stealing the ball, blocking shots, making them uncomfortable.

A POOR DEFENDER

Gets visibly frustrated when they or their teammates miss a shot or make a bad pass. Gives up if their team is down by more than they'd like, and starts taking bad shots (see: Ball Hog).

CAN’T MAKE A GAME?

Being a good communicator starts with giving the club as much notice as possible. Please submit the absent form — ideally 24+ hours before your session. Less than 7 hours notice incurs a $10 fee.
